Age 98, Vernon H. Winquist of Livonia passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on September 28, 2021. He was a beloved husband of Dolores for 74 years, a loving father of Nancy (Dan) Hughes, a cherished grandfather of Jeff (Autumn) Hughes and the late Jennifer (Michael) Mancuso, grandfather of Savannah, Beckett, Mya, Zoe and Reven.
Vernon was born in Mohawk, Michigan July 22, 1923. He proudly served our country as a Marine during WW II. Following the war Vernon and Dolores (nee Leinonen) were married November 16, 1946. They would have celebrated 75 years of marriage this year. Vernon was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Farmington Hills, formerly of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Anyone who knew him knew how much he loved sports, the Tigers and Red Wings were his favorite.
Vernon was known for telling great stories of the good old days, he often talked about growing up in the U.P. and life in Bumble Town. He talked about working at the CC camps planting trees prior to the war, before moving south to Detroit. During WW II he was a Chef/Cook in the Marines, serving the pacific front stationed in Hawaii. Once he returned from the war, he started his career at Burroughs.
Vernon will always be known as a supportive and loving man, someone who would always be there for you. He loved children and was a strong rooted family man, he loved entertaining and having people over. The holidays were his favorite times of the year, he loved being surrounded by family and friends.
Funeral services will be 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 10, at the Thayer-Rock Funeral Home, 33603 Grand River, Downtown Farmington. Visitation Sunday 1-4 pm.
