Age 91. Shirley Zeigler was born the second of five children June 10, 1924 to Thomas and Elizabeth Barry in Detroit, Michigan. The Barry children were invited to attend The Salvation Army Detroit Brightmoor Corps at a young age and it was there that Shirley accepted Jesus as her personal savior and Lord. She was active in the corps and various Army activities. It was at Eastern Michigan's Echo Grove Camp where she met the young man that was to later become her husband.
Shirley entered the School for Officer Training in Chicago from the Detroit Brightmoor Corps in 1943 and was commissioned with the Liberty session in 1944. She served as the assistant corps officer in Petoskey and Alpena Michigan before leaving officership to marry Clinton Zeigler February 1946. Together, they raised their two daughters, Major Cheryl Bailey and Nancy Angel. Shirley had the heart of an evangelist and reached out to her neighbors and coworkers with the word of God bringing children from her neighborhood to church and corps activities. She served as Sunbeam leader, Sunday School teacher and Home League Secretary impacting many in their spiritual development. Living out the Army's motto of Heart to God Hand to Man, Shirley and her husband also volunteered with Thanksgiving, Christmas and various assistance programs. She remained a faithful soldier of the Detroit Brightmoor, Alpena and the Dearborn Heights Corps.
Shirley was promoted to Glory September 3, 2015 at the Assisted Living Unit of the Villages of Redford in Redford, Michigan.
