Ronald Roy Fischer was born on June 29, 1937, the first child of Elmer and Louise Fischer. The family lived in Sterling Heights for many years working their own farm. Ron began his career at Michigan Bell, then he moved to Burroughs and later joined the apprenticeship program as an electrician at General Motors. While at GM, he was selected as part of a pilot group to implement a new methodology of manufacturing using robots at a new production facility now known as the GM Lake Orion plant.
Ron met his future wife, Jean, at a party, but their first official date was attending church. They married in 1960 and moved to a charming neighborhood in Clawson. Christopher was born in 1966 and in 1968 they built a new house in Shelby Township.
Ron loved to travel with his family. Ron and Jean enjoyed going to Eastern Market in the morning to shop for flowers and have lunch at the local Polish restaurants. He was also an avid gardener and model train collector.
When Jean contracted pancreatic cancer in 2013, he spent every day at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, despite his own mobility challenges. After 53 years of marriage, Jean passed. Ron remained at Waltonwood in Rochester Hills, becoming a beloved member of the Waltonwood community.
In June of 2022, Ron was diagnosed with a glioblastoma (brain tumor). Following surgery, radiation and chemotherapy he was stable, engaging with many of his Waltonwood friends as before while awaiting his next check point MRI. Unfortunately, due to complications from the treatment process, Ron passed away on the evening of Saturday, November 5th.
He leaves behind his son Christopher and daughter-in-law Elaine, his sister Lois, brother-in-law Art and sisters-in-law, Karen and Penny. Ron will be missed by all of those who knew him.
The Fischer family will receive guests 2:00 – 8:00 pm, Friday, November 11th, at Thayer-Rock Funeral Home 33603 Grand River Ave. Farmington.
Ron’s funeral service will be at 11:00 am (in state 10:00 am), Saturday, November 12th, at St. John Lutheran Church 23225 Gill Road, Farmington Hills.
