Patricia Ann (Ruffing) Kanny Obituary

Loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, Grams, and Aunt, Patricia Ann Kanny was born May 21,1934 in Buffalo, New York to Clarence and Emma (Scharf) Ruffing and died December 15, 2024. She was the baby sister to her brother Thomas (Brother Robert), by one year and 9 days. Together they grew up in Buffalo, Flint, and Detroit as they moved with their father’s job. They enjoyed sharing their quite different lives, hers as a mother of six and his in his Catholic religious life.

Graduating from St. Mary’s of Redford in 1952, Pat was the Vice-President of her senior class. There she developed many friendships lasting well over 60 years and enjoyed regular class reunions. She knew how to have fun and was a loyal friend and confidant!

While in high school at St. Mary’s, Pat met her husband Floyd (Bud) Kanny. They were married 68 years before his death on December 22, 2021. Their marriage consisted of hard work, discipline, sacrifice, and love to raise their six children. She was a proud mother, pleased that her children achieved their individual happiness and success. Her home of 69 years was an open door welcoming her children’s spouses, her nieces and nephew, and all those who came to visit. Especially bringing pleasure to her family was the Christmas season with an overabundance of food, togetherness, and, of course, sharing joy with presents. It was important to her that the family stayed together celebrating not only the good times but working with each other through the tough times. Together Pat and Bud supported their grandchildren through many life accomplishments. She was overjoyed watching her great grandchildren achieve the smallest of milestones! As much as she and Bud liked to travel in their minivan after retirement, her favorite place was home where she was the most comfortable.

Surviving her are six children: Patricia (W. Gary) Hardy, Michael (Karen) Kanny, Mark (Leslie) Kanny, Gerrianne (Newton) Hurst, Lori (Scott) Hay, and Matthew (Kim) Kanny; fifteen grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren; Brother Robert Ruffing, nieces Caron (Charlie) Eno, and Colleen (John) Hunter. Welcoming her to her heavenly home is her husband, Bud, along with her parents, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas and Marie Kennedy, and her nephew, Tom Kennedy and all her extended family.

Mom gave her family the greatest gift which is life itself asking that we only do our best. So fitting is this of our mother:

“Where we love is home, home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.”

Wendell Holmes Sr.
