Michael O. Kangas of Clinton Township (formerly of South Lyon and Redford Township) passed away Friday, March 28, 2025 at the age of 81.
Loving father of daughters Kelly (Ken) Johnson, Kimberly (Jim) Lehr, and Kris (Larry) Nabors. Cherished grandfather of Cameron, Madison (Dylan), Bethany, Jacob, Allison, Brandon, Heather (Jesse), James (Kori), and Logan, great-grandfather of Elizabeth, Emily, Ryan, Joey, Karissa and Elena, and loved by many extended family members and friends. Michael was preceded in death by his beloved wife (of 48 years) Paulet, parents Matt and Mildred and sister Marie Mathewson. He will be deeply missed.
Michael was a proud U.S. Army Veteran. Early in his career he worked as a mechanic at Detroit Diesel. He later joined Riggers Local 575 in 1977 and retired as a Rigger Ironworker (Local 25) in 2008. An avid reader and history buff, he especially enjoyed sharing facts about Detroit sports teams. He enjoyed card games, golfing, bowling and playing hockey and truly enjoyed spending time and having fun with his family. Later in life, as he faced health challenges and a Parkinson’s diagnosis, he remained determined to stay as active as possible and engaged in as many family activities as he could, including a family road trip with his daughter and grandkids to the Keweenaw (Upper Peninsula) in 2015. And with the support of his caregiver Felipe, he was able to stay living in the comfort of his own home. A true Finlander, Michael exemplified SISU (determination and composure in the face of adversity).
