Mary Scheffler Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Scheffler was born on January 15, 1925 and died on September 10, 2021 at the age of 96.  She is survived by her children William, Susan (Dave) Schaner, Ted (Sarah), Fred (Linda), Neal (Teri), Anne, and Barbara; her sisters Clara and Margaret Hanson, her brother Jim (Janet) Hanson, sister-in-law Helen Burgstaler, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, son Robert, grandson Matthew Schaner, brothers; Carl, Al, Bill, Fran, and Leo Hanson, sisters; Bertha Cunningham and Lillian Hanson, and daughter-in-law Carolyn Scheffler.  Mary was a lifelong member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, even going back to the days when church services were held in the homes of the small flock of Christians who were then living in the Detroit area.  She then, over the years, attended services in either Farmington Hills, Michigan, or Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.

Mary was born in Detroit, Michigan to Frances and Leonard Hanson, and when she was nine years old, the family moved to Farmington, Michigan, where she was raised and then graduated from Farmington High School.  While still in high school, she worked in the credit office at Montgomery Ward in Detroit, taking first a bus and then a streetcar to get from Farmington to Detroit.  After graduation, she worked as a secretary for the Civil Aeronautics Administration.

During World War II, she began corresponding with Arthur Scheffler, who was overseas, and once the war was over, Art moved to Farmington from Minnesota, and he and Mary were married on June 15, 1946.  They raised their large family in Farmington, but in later years purchased a farm in Rudyard, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula, and spent many vacations and weekends there.  After Art’s death in 1989, Mary split her time between Farmington and Rudyard, but once her health declined and prevented her from traveling, she was content to stay at her farm in Rudyard, and it was there she passed away with her family at her side.
