Margaret "Peg" Glatfelter Obituary

Margaret “Peg” Arlene Glatfelter of West Bloomfield, Michigan, passed away on October 11, 2024, peacefully in her home with her husband of seventy-three years by her side.  She was ninety-one years old.

Peg was born April 8th, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan to Carl and Marion Shaw in a family of three children.  She was the youngest of two brothers; Robert Shaw (Bernice) and Herbert Shaw (Bernie) who have also passed.  She married Edward Glatfelter in 1951 and raised two children together.  She is survived by her husband, Edward, two children, Jeff Glatfelter (Dawn), and April Fraser, as well as her granddaughter, Angela Khan, and two great grandchildren, Sofia Khan, and Bianca Khan.

Peg worked as a social worker in Wayne County, Michigan, and served on various boards including Common Ground Sanctuary, local YWCA, Michigan Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse, and Out Wayne County Council on Child Abuse and Neglect among others.  She was a current member of the Michigan Board of Marriage and Family Therapy appointed by Governor John Engler.  She graduated from University of Michigan with a master’s degree in social work and did her undergraduate work at the University of Michigan.  She was dedicated to helping her community working as a social worker in various school systems throughout Michigan for over twenty years.

In her early retirement, she was an active member of the Bloomfield Republican Women’s Club and served as a Program Director for various non-profit agencies.  She was an active and proud member of the West Bloomfield Township community serving as a member of the Board of Canvassers for over twelve years and whenever given the opportunity, would take her grandchildren to the West Bloomfield Public Library to show off the family brick and of course check out books for evening reads.

“Nana” as she preferred to be called by her grandchildren, enjoyed cruising around the world with her beloved husband and traveled to over two-hundred countries.  She was known throughout the neighborhood for her beautiful backyard garden and flowers.  She enjoyed lunching with girlfriends and had a great passion for protecting children through advocacy programs and thoughtful discussions she participated in at non-profit child trafficking prevention events she attended with her granddaughter in Carmel, Indiana, in the late part of her life.  She will be dearly missed by her family and friends but forever in our hearts and igniting our souls to continue the work she did in caring for children in need.
