Linda Lee (Nagy) Heard Obituary

Linda Lee Heard, a lifelong Michigander and passionate advocate for words, ideas, and knowledge, passed away peacefully in Novi, Michigan. She was 80 years old.

Born on November 14, 1944, in Detroit to Alex and Ingrid Nagy, Linda was raised in a home that celebrated culture, conversation, and community. Her parents instilled in her a love for the arts,
diversity, and fine cuisine—values she carried with grace throughout her life. A proud graduate of Farmington High School, Linda went on to earn her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and later a master’s degree from Michigan State University, embodying the spirit of both state’s great institutions.

Her professional life was a testament to her love of language and civic engagement. Linda worked in public relations, contributed essays as a freelance writer, and ultimately found her calling as a speechwriter for the Michigan Senate Democratic Staff. Her words helped shape policy, inspire action, and give voice to causes she held dear—especially those advancing women’s rights in Michigan.

Linda’s heart belonged to Michigan. She lived her entire life in the state she loved, championed its people, and cheered on its teams—none more fervently than her beloved Detroit Tigers. Yet her
curiosity and sense of wonder took her far beyond its borders. She was an avid traveler, with a particular fondness for Europe and a deep affection for Paris, a city she returned to often in both
body and spirit.

She was a woman of intellect and warmth, who relished spirited conversation, thoughtful debate, and staying informed on the issues of the day. Her presence lit up a room, not with volume, but
with insight, humor, and a genuine interest in others. Linda is survived by her two sons, Michael Heard and David Heard, both of whom are married and blessed her with five cherished grandchildren, and her loving sister, Nancy Youngdahl. Her legacy lives on in them—in their words, their convictions, and their love of family.

Though her passing leaves a profound void, Linda would remind us, in the words of Dr. Seuss: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” And indeed, we smile through our tears,
grateful for the life she lived and the lives she touched.
