Jim Moroney Obituary
James Kevin Moroney, 71, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
James was born on June 6, 1954, in Detroit, MI, to Harold and Jessie Moroney. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Barbara Nonte, Jess Ann Moroney, and brothers: Harold "Bill" Moroney, Thomas Moroney, and Philip Moroney. He is survived by his beloved wife and cherished life partner of 46 years, Kathy; sons, Jeffery (Lauren) Moroney and Timothy Moroney; daughter, Danielle Moroney; two grandchildren; brother: David (Karen) Moroney; sisters: Joan Van Proeyen, Colleen Crissman, Mary Jo Moroney, and Carole Lynn (Bob Socia) Moroney.
A gifted, self-taught musician, James’ passion for music sparked in high school and stayed with him throughout his life. Over the years, he played in several bands alongside close friends—ranging from cover bands to playing bass for the original pop-rock band The Romeo Flynns. Together, they created three albums and became a fixture of the Metro Detroit music scene, playing local venues, the Royal Oak Arts, Beats & Eats festival, and his personal favorite, the International Pop Overthrow. The highlight of his musical journey was performing at Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club—taking the very same stage where The Beatles launched their career.
For 35 years, James was a trusted colleague, leader, and friend within the automotive community, proudly serving Farmington and the greater metro area as an auto parts sales expert, counterman, and manager—a role in which he considered it a true privilege to assist his customers. Beyond his work, James was an avid sports enthusiast and a lifelong, devout Detroit Tigers fan who also celebrated the rare milestone of rolling a perfect 300 game at Merri-Bowl Lanes. Above all, his heart was most full when dancing with his wife, relaxing with his children, and playing with his grandchildren. James will be fondly remembered for his laid-back spirit, quick wit, resilience, and a deep passion for reading everything from sci-fi to history.
There will be an open visitation to pay respects at Thayer-Rock Funeral Home in Farmington, MI, on August 7th, 2026, from 11:00 am until time of service at 6:30 pm.
