Gene Syverson, 94, of Livonia, MI, passed away on October 3, 2025. He was born in Ormsby, MN in 1931 to Myron and Gilma Syverson. Gene enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1948, and served our country honorably in the Korean War. He was member of Gun Battery A, 48th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division. Gene was Chief of his section. Following his military service, he graduated from the University of Minnesota and began a teaching career that spanned 41 years, most of which were spent in Farmington Public Schools. On June 14, 1969, Gene married the love of his life, Marilyn Stribbell and they enjoyed 50 wonderful years together. They settled in Livonia, MI where they raised their three sons and gained many lifelong friends along the way. Gene’s life became enriched further as he became grandfather to seven grandchildren whom he adored. He was a kind and gentle man, who was loved and admired by many.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, parents Myron and Gilma, siblings Patricia, Maurice, Barbara, James and JoEllen, nephews Kelly and Jeff, and nieces Joleen, Carol and
Trudy. He is survived by his children Eric (Colleen), John and Matt (Lisa), grandchildren Gabe, Ben, Clover, Anna, Samantha, Jack and Tricia, and siblings Karen and Kent (Jan).
The Syverson family will receive guests at Thayer-Rock Funeral Home (33603 Grand River Ave, Farmington, MI 48335) on Friday, October 10 from 4:00-8:00 PM, with a eulogy and sharing of memories at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gerald Catholic Church (21300 Farmington Rd, Farmington, MI) on Saturday, October 11 at 11:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made in Gene’s name to DRMM (Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries), one of his favorite charities.
