Frederick Leo Steven Locke, age 82, passed away on July 1, 2026, at Angela Hospice in Livonia, Michigan, after spending many hours with his loving family. Formerly Frederick Zablocki, he was born to the late Margaret Hric Locke and Leo Locke (Zablocki). Fred was raised in Westland, Michigan.

After graduation from Wayne High School, he earned both a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1965 and a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1966 from the University of Michigan, graduating at the top of his class. During the Vietnam War, he served his country in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service as a computer engineer. Fred went on to a distinguished career in information technology, holding positions with IBM, Federal-Mogul, and Chrysler Corporation.

Fred met his wife, Elizabeth “Beth” Ann Lundry, through the Ann Arbor Ski Club. They married in 1973 and shared more than five decades of adventure on the slopes. Skiing became a defining family tradition, with frequent holiday trips to Vermont and weeklong trips to Colorado. Fred and Beth delighted in bringing their children and later their grandchildren along, creating many cherished memories.

Fred considered himself a medical miracle. In the early 1990s, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. After multiple rounds of standard chemotherapy, his prospects were grim until he enrolled in an experimental immunotherapy clinical trial at the University of Michigan. The treatment brought him into a lasting remission and gave him nearly four more decades with the people he loved, years he treasured deeply. He later underwent successful heart surgery in 2016, which rapidly restored his health after severe heart failure.

A proud University of Michigan alumnus, he was a devoted Wolverine football fan and held season tickets beginning in 1970. He shared that passion with his sons, taking them to Michigan games from their earliest days and creating decades of special Saturdays together. (Go Blue!)

In retirement, Fred and Beth made Venice, Florida, their winter home and a base for many happy adventures. They enjoyed frequent cruises, bike rides along the Legacy Trail with friends, and countless hours bird-watching throughout Florida and beyond. Fred was an active member of the Venice Audubon Society and three Florida photography clubs, combining his love of the outdoors with an enduring interest in photography.

His interest in photography also reflected a deep desire to preserve family memories. He spent countless hours digitizing family photographs and videos so they could be enjoyed by generations to come. That same interest in preserving family history led Fred to genealogy. He traced the histories of his own family lines, including the Zablocki, Hric, and Maly families, as well as Beth’s, including the Lundry, Wheatley, and Wilder families, and generously shared his discoveries with relatives near and far.

An only child, Fred was grateful to become part of Beth’s large family, where he was a beloved brother-in-law and uncle. He and Beth especially loved welcoming relatives to their lake house in Canadian Lakes, Michigan, where days were spent swimming, fishing, boating, enjoying nature, playing games, making s’mores, and simply being together. Over the years, Fred greatly enjoyed the many family gatherings, including reunions in Vermont, upstate New York, and New Jersey, as well as cruises to Bermuda and through the Panama Canal.

Fred is survived by Beth, his wife of 53 years; their children, Frederick Lundry Locke, MD, and his wife, Kelly O’Leary Locke, and Andrew Steven Locke, JD, and his wife, Emily Tulikangas; seven grandchildren, Adrienne, Evan, Emily, Elizabeth, Freddie, Theodore, and Gideon; and his sisters-in-law, Diane Lundry Brigham and Karen Muriel Lundry.

Private interment will be held at Cadillac Memorial Gardens West in Westland, Michigan. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
