Eric John Nikkila, of Royal Oak, passed away on September 14, 2025 surrounded by family and music. He was 64 years old and joins his beloved parents, Jack and Dolly Nikkila. Eric lived a full and fulfilling life, acting as an anchor for a close-knit group of friends and his large family. He devoted his time and energy to the PRISM Men’s Chorus of Detroit and he shared his joy in games, reading, travel, wine and song with all who knew him.
Eric will be forever missed by his siblings, Kurt, Steven (Janet), Jeffrey (Barb) and Laurel. He will also be missed by his aunts, uncles and cousins. He had a profound impact on the lives of his nieces and nephews, whom he taught to play in so many ways: Lynne (Paul), Sonja (Cameron), Ben Sands (Tracey), Cory (Stacey), Leila Sands, Jonathan (Natalie), Madeline, Kyle Sands and Quinn Sands along with many great-nieces and great-nephews. Eric’s loss is also deeply felt by his lifelong friends with whom he shared his home, his heart, his games and his travel.
We are deeply grieving the loss of Eric, but we celebrate his life as a trickster, a lover of parties and togetherness, a generous host, a supportive brother and uncle, a seeker of fun and adventure. We honor his faith, and his tenacity and spirit amid his health struggles in the last year of his life. We will remember him always.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to: the American Cancer Society and/or the PRISM Men’s Chorus of Detroit.
