Elaine Martin Obituary

Elaine Jean Martin of Farmington Hills, MI passed away on Tuesday, February 6th, 2024, after reaching the age of 89 years.

Elaine (Jean) was born on July 7, 1934, in Walkerville, Ontario as the third of seven children born to Alfred and Janet Mullins. Jean was born-and-raised in Canada, attending St. Mary’s Academy in Windsor, Ontario until she graduated in 1952, and Bulmer Business College thereafter.

In 1956, Jean immigrated to the U.S. to help her mom with her younger siblings when her father moved here to work in the auto industry. The move to the U.S. was supposed to be temporary, but in 1959, she met the love of her life, Edwin (Ed) Martin, while standing up in a wedding for mutual friends.

Ed and Jean wed on May 7, 1960, and were married for 62 love-filled years. They first planted roots in Detroit, where they built a home together and raised their family for four decades until moving to Farmington Hills.

Jean spent her career as a bookkeeper in various industries. As a working mom, she was committed to raising her girls to be strong, independent women much like herself.

As a young adult, Jean loved to dance, receiving many awards and accolades. She and her long-time friend Dolores “Doe” McCartney danced the jitterbug at her eldest grandchildren’s weddings. She also enjoyed oil painting, going to the casino, sewing, and entertaining— hobbies she maintained until the very end.

In addition to her two daughters, Jean was blessed with four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who she deeply adored. With every new generation came a little extra love. She had a soft spot for the littles and loved watching them play. She loved to spoil her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with sweet treats when they came to visit; you could be sure you’d never leave her house without a plate of cookies.

Jean was a force. When she set her mind to something, she never gave up on it. She had high expectations for herself, her family, and those around her. Jean faced many tough battles in her life but bounced back with the same fierce spirit each time.

Her family will remember her not only for her strength, but also for her willingness to be silly. She was a proper woman to whom manners mattered very much, but she loved to tease, and could lighten up the room and break you out in laughter in a second. She always kept you on the edge of your seat.

Jean is survived by her youngest sister, Maureen Levesque of Stony Point, Ontario, her beloved daughters and their husbands; Kelly (Rob) Hojnacki and Shaun (Dean) Fracassi. Her grandchildren and their spouses; Caitlin (Mike) Chavez, Ed (Ashley) Hojnacki, Jenna (Caleb) Baird, and Tyler Fracassi, as well as her great-grandchildren Blake, Caden, Elaina and Lyla.

A visitation for Jean will be held on Friday, February 9th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Thayer-Rock Funeral Home located at 33603 Grand River Ave, Farmington, MI 48335.

A funeral mass will take place on Saturday, February 10th at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church located at 23815 Power Rd, Farmington, MI 48336.

Jean will be laid to rest at All Saints Cemetery in Waterford, MI.
