Barbara Duncan Obituary

Barbara Elien Duncan, wife to Edmond and daughter of the late Moses and Mary Elien, passed away suddenly on May 16. She was 74.

She prided herself on a long and successful professional life. Possessing talent in building and craftsmanship, she earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Central Michigan University and a Master of Arts in industrial education from Eastern Michigan University. She became one of Michigan’s first female industrial arts teachers. Although widely skilled, she was lauded for her automotive prowess, including her ability to break down and rebuild engines.

After teaching, she managed several of her family’s businesses and enjoyed a 30-year career with Ford Motor Company. On the manufacturing floor of Livonia Transmission, she supervised large teams and was often asked to assist others with output and safety improvements.

Barbara was a deeply devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Edmond; her brother, Thomas; her children Jeffrey, Troy, Steven, and Joseph; her grandchildren Clare and John; and many cherished friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Edmond.

Those who knew her will remember her loving generosity, her perseverance, her work ethic and—of course—her smile and laughter. She inspired her children to kindness and nurtured in them a love of music and reading. She was a wonderful cook and baker who shared countless pizza boxes full of her incomparable baklava. She loved exchanging newspaper and magazine clippings, and she found endless joy in the classic rock played from her extensive music collection. Her grandchildren especially loved the treats she baked for them and the countless books she read aloud.

Barbara’s indomitable spirit will live on in all who knew and loved her.
