Ann M. Makila Obituary

Ann Marcia Makila, age 88 passed away on November 29, 2023 at home after extensive surgery.


She was born on December 17, 1934, to Charles and Martha Dantes in Herman, Michigan, a farming community in the Upper Peninsula.


While growing up, she was active in 4H.  She played the clarinet in the L’anse High School band and sang in the school choir.


One summer during High School, she worked as a waitress at Ervast’s Restaurant in Chassell, Michigan and also as a babysitter and housekeeper for them.


During her High School years, she also worked as a secretary for J. Clyde Campbell, attorney in L’Anse.


After High School graduation, she attended nurses training at Highland Park General Hospital in Highland Park, Michigan, graduating as an RN in 1952.  She worked there for awhile after graduation, then in several doctors offices before going to work at Annapolis Hospital for 22 years.  Then she worked for Dr. Evans Farres at his office in Canton, Michigan for 11 years before retiring at age 73.


She married Edward Makila on January 21, 1956.  He preceded her in death on November 23, 2000.  Also preceding her in death were her daughter Linda Sue, and Gail Murphy (Moton), her parents, her brothers Bertil Dantes, Charles Dantes, and sister Faye Boomer, both sets of grandparents and numerous cousins.  She is survived by 2 children;  Bonnie Wernick (Robin), and Gregory Makila, 5 grandchildren; Amber, Elizabeth, Amy, Chelsea and Andrew, and 6 great grandchildren; Anna, Selah, Ephraim, Amaris, Jerusalem, and Gannon.


She had been a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school.  She was also camp nurse at Luther Vista in Brighton, Michigan for many years, where the church had a bible camp.  She also led a weight group at St. John’s and attended the charismatic group that started there, that experience eventually brought her to Fair Haven Assembly of God in Dearborn Heights where she has been a member since March 2, 1997 where she was still an active member.  She had taught a class there and also worked in the nursery.


She also attended a bible study on Wednesday nights at Community Free Will Baptist Church in Westland.


She loved to line dance, ballroom dance and read.  She was an active member at a health club, going swimming several times a week.  She loved to socialize with family and friends.


She was a past secretary of a weight group in Livonia, which she had attended for 25 years.


She was also involved in 12-step groups for many years.
