Shirley
Miller
Jan 15, 1929 — Jul 11, 2017
Shirley Miller, 88, formerly of Farmington Hills and Bradenton, Florida, died in Novi, Michigan on July 11, 2017. Shirley was born on January 15, 1929 in Brookfield, Illinois to Foster and Vera (Carson) Carrington. She was raised in Detroit, where she graduated from Mackenzie High School in 1946, after which she attended Western Michigan University.
Shirley married Robert H. Miller in Detroit on October 15, 1949, and they were happily married for over 62 years until his death on March 4, 2012. Bob and Shirley lived in Redford Township for nearly 50 years before they moved to Farmington Hills in 1999. After 1995, they spent their winters in Bradenton.
Shirley enjoyed life as a homemaker but went to work for Michigan Bell when her children reached college age and she retired from Ameritech after many promotions and 20 years of service.
Shirley and Bob loved to travel and were long-time members of the Nomads Travel Club with whom they made many trips to Europe, the Caribbean and the USA. They also enjoyed frequent trips to Chicago and Marquette to visit family. They were active members of the Plymouth Elks Club, the Bradenton Elks Club and the First United Methodist Church of Farmington. Shirley also enjoyed reading literary novels and biographies (Anne Tyler was her favorite author), going to movies and the theater, working on her computer, loved to garden and, most of all, spending time with her family. She was blessed with a loving family, good health and a positive and optimistic personality.
Shirley is survived by her children Bill (Pastor) Miller, David (Jean) Miller and Kathy (Gene) Zieniewicz, her grandsons Ian Miller, Andy Miller, Matt (Sonya) Zieniewicz, and David (Brianne) Zieniewicz, her great-grandsons Dawson and Camden Zieniewicz, her brother Ian (Carol) Hunter, and special cousin Merry Carson. Besides Bob, she was predeceased by her parents, her stepfather Archie Hunter, Bob's parents Robert and Helen Miller, her brother Bill (the late Joan) Carrington, and her grandson Brian Miller.
Many thanks to the employees at Waltonwood Senior Living in Novi, where Shirley lived for the last few years.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 14th, from 4-8 PM at Thayer-Rock Funeral Home in downtown Farmington.
The Funeral Service will be PRIVATE.
Interment will be at a later date at Glen Eden Memorial Park Cemetery in Livonia, next to Bob and his parents.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Shirley's name to the Brian Miller Full Moon Charity, www.brianmillerfullmoon.com, which makes grants to local programs that provide support for people living with addiction.
