Obituary

Sherrill was born on August 30, 1933 and passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020.

He is survived by his brothers Hewitt Hammer and Roland Hammer (Sandra), his children Kathryn Moroney (James) and Michael Hammer (LeDesa), 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a niece and 2 nephews. Near the end of his life he was able to be close to his family, passing away peacefully with his children at his side.

Sherrill was a veteran who served his country during the Korean War as an Aviation Electrician for the United States Navy. Serving over 3 years, he was honorably discharged in 1954, earning several medals of commendation.

Sherrill turned his passion for cars into a 30-year career by joining Ford Motor Company as a Design Engineer. During that time, he was privileged and proud to have worked with Lee Iacocca during the creation of the Mustang. An experience that inspired him to purchase his own Mustang in 2018.

During his life, Sherrill enjoyed gardening, and various recreational activities, including riding motorcycles and snowmobiles. He also participated in golf, bowling and softball leagues. After retirement he relocated to Hilton Head Island and enjoyed a relaxing lifestyle playing golf and tennis and renewed his love of dancing by joining a shag club.

The Hammer family will receive friends at the Thayer-Rock Funeral home in Farmington, MI on Friday, February 28th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, and for an hour prior to the funeral. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday February 29th. A private burial will follow at the Glen Eden Cemetery in Livonia, Michigan.

Memorial gifts of remembrance can be directed to St. Luke's Church on Hilton Head Island, SC or made to the charity of your own choice.

The Hammer family wishes to convey their heartfelt thanks and greatly appreciate the staff at Avon Oaks Caring Community and the Cleveland Clinic hospice care team for their kind and compassionate care given to their Dad.

"Dad you will live forever in our thoughts and hearts. Rest in Peace. We love you!"
