Obituary

Sarah Frances Lee, born December 21, 1915, passed away on September 16, 2013. She was 97 years old. Sarah was born in St. Louis, MO to Frank & Lucinda Ross McCree. She married Brown Lee on December 27, 1941, in St. Charles, MO. Brown served in the US Army during WWII, and Sarah relocated to Hamtramck, MI at that time to be closer to family. After the war, Brown joined Sarah, and they later bought their home on Waverly Street in Detroit where all three of their children (Frances, Anna, and Calvin) grew up.
Sarah was a homemaker until Calvin went off to school. She entered the workforce at that time and held various positions. Sarah loved to cook, bake, sew, knit and crochet. Neighbors and friends were always welcome in her home. Her sweet potato pie was a special favorite, but there were so many tasty dishes: apple pie, bread pudding, sugar cookies. . . She always had enough food for the many visitors who gathered around her dining room table. Sarah was a member of the Dexter Ave. Baptist Church. On any given Sunday you could find her in the kitchen in the basement of the church. That was her domain. In 1993, Sarah and Brown moved to a new home in Southfield. In 1996, Sarah lost Brown, her beloved husband of 55 years. She moved to Farmington Hills to be closer to her daughter Frances. Her final home was at the Heatherwood Assisted Living Community, in Southfield.

Sarah is survived by her three children: Frances Hill, Anna Banks, Calvin Lee (Martha); grandchildren: Quinn, Tara, Nathaniel, Jordan, Shoshanna, Karamo (Sei-kiou); great-grandchildren: Anthony, Kai, Sundiata, Suwarie and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. This extended-family has come to include many of the staff members at Heatherwood who provided such loving & compassionate care to her in the last years of her life. The family gives special thanks to these "angels".

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 26th from 2-8 p.m. at the Thayer-Rock Funeral Home, downtown Farmington.

Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 27th at Thayer-Rock Funeral Home.

Entombment will take place at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley, Michigan.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Michigan www.hom.org.
