Obituary

Age 79.
Beloved Husband of Marion (Lewis) Severs for 52 years. Loving brother of Jane (Currie) Andrews, Mary Ann (Marc) Speiser, sister-in-law Sharon Ott, the late Ann Severs, the late Kathleen Dolanski and the late David Severs. Dear godfather and uncle of Kristin Ott. Loving uncle of David and Jeremy Severs and many other nieces and nephews.

Born on Jan 3, 1938, to Raymond M. Severs and Henrietta M. Deeg Severs (both deceased), Roy spent most of his childhood in Birmingham, MI. With his siblings, he learned to ride horses at the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club, spent summers at his grandfather's farm in Evart and later at the family "cottage" on Sand Point off Saginaw Bay. After graduation from high school, he spent 5 years in the Air Force, much of that time in Alaska where he cemented a lifelong passion for nature photography.

Shortly after returning to civilian life, he met Marion, the woman he would marry. Their first date was August 16, 1964. Marion soon learned that Roy always made up his mind quickly and seldom changed it. He informed her a month later that they were going to get married. She said in surprise: "We are?!!". But she acquiesced, and he made it official with an engagement ring on October 23rd. They were married December 11, 1964, just 4 months after their first date. Their love and marriage of 52 years withstood many challenges - the last being Parkinson's disease.

Roy had many passions besides photography: music (many genres, but his favorite was Jazz), traveling (always with his camera), his gardens, his loving dogs, his home and his grandfather's farm, where he found such peace. Over time, he had to give up his gardening, extensive traveling, and finally in 2016, his photography. With help, he was still able to visit the Severs' "farm", with his family and his dog. The last dog that he mourned was Fritz, who died in 2014. Fritz left a big hole in his heart. His current canine friend, who is now mourning him, is Ella (named for Ella Fitzgerald) - another sassy terrier.

Many have called Roy a good and gentle man, a loyal friend. He was all of these plus a caring, compassionate and generous human being. He worked for Kmart at their warehouse in Canton for almost 30 years. He valued the friendship of his longtime Kmart buddies who saw his fun-loving side, not always visible to others.

A man of few words, he spoke when he felt he could add to the conversation. Many would be surprised to learn that he won an award in a Dale Carnegie speaking course. He had a dry sense of humor that sometimes would catch people off-guard and a great welcoming smile. As the Parkinson's progressed, those few words and that wonderful smile eventually became difficult to bring forth. Through these many years, he never complained and did all he could to still live fully, even with the effects of the disease. His courage and acceptance served as a role model for all.

He will be sorely missed by all his family and friends, but we are grateful that he no longer has that struggle.
