Obituary

Phyllis Delaney Hildebrandt, age 92, died on March 5, 2018, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was born on May 31, 1925, in Ishpeming, Michigan to Martin Delaney and Mabel Priestley Delaney, recent immigrants from Ireland and England. The youngest of four sisters, she grew up in Flint, Michigan. Upon graduation from high school, she moved to Ann Arbor, where she worked as a secretary for the University of Michigan and met her husband of 70 years, Eugene Hildebrandt. After his graduation from the School of Engineering at U. of M. and service in the U.S. Navy, they moved to Dearborn and then Farmington Hills, where they raised four children.

Highly respected and fondly remembered as a kind and caring elementary school secretary, Phyllis worked for the Farmington school district for 20 years. Above all, she loved being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Phyllis was a lovely woman, warm, spirited, and funny, with a talent for engaging children in imaginative play and storytelling. Her grandchildren adored spending time with their "Grandma Phyl." She lived the last two years of her life in Ann Arbor with her daughter, Susan, and son-in-law, Chuck. Her husband, Eugene, preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 2016.

Phyllis is survived by three of her children, Madge Hildebrandt Klais (Albert Edward), Kim Hildebrandt (Ann), and Susan Hildebrandt Burch (Charles). Her beloved son, Kevin Hildebrandt, died of cancer in 1985. She is deeply missed by her children and her grandchildren, Molly Klais Springer (Peter), Katherine Hildebrandt (Joffe), Ethan Burch, Hilary Burch, Martin Burch, and Jim Burch, and two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Everett Springer.
