Obituary

Judith Adams Cook's life ended on August 13, 2011 after nearly 71 rich and remarkable years.

These years have been more than extensive travel with her parents, Robert and Mildred Cook....more than a 10 year partnership with Linda Arndt in their youth, one that segued into a friendship and love that spanned 47 years and which will last until Linda's last breath---more than the strong, central relationship of 25 years with Anna Mae Kiraly (now deceased) and her family that has become Judy's family too: Anna Mae's sister Mary Johnson, from Baton Rouge, kept in touch with Judy on a regular basis. Anna Mae's daughter Chris Kiraly-Thomas (Kent) and their children Gabriel and Elijah and Gabriel's fiancé, Jamie Desmarais,...and daughter Ginny Kiraly-Walker and her partner Michael Otto, and her son, Atticus---with Judy all the while protesting: "I didn't ever want kids...bunch of little rug rats..." while she is down on the rug herself, driving Anna Mae crazy having screaming contests with the toddlers.

Judy's life has been even more than her honor-studded degrees earned at the University of Michigan and the University of California at Berkley---her years of teaching English in California and Michigan in high schools, Prairie View College in Texas, and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti---still more than her years as an attorney, her degree earned at the University of Michigan and her association with the Bar which continued until her death.

Look at all that accomplishment, all the scores of friends scattered across the country and grieving with her loss---special people like Angie and Mick Fishel , Sue Ellen and Tom Musgrove, Val and Harry Cook, Ellie and John Reading, Lori Bennett, Sharon Fedchenko, Carol and Tom Carr, Pat Natale, Carolyn and Terry Wik, and dozens of neighbors up and down the streets of her life: Barb and Chuck, Ralph, Jean, and Holly, Rita and Marge, and a cousin, Edwin Tripp. Flesh out these words with laughter, quick wit and incredible intelligence and knowledge, and with her work to continue the legacy that the Cook family began by being one of the founding families of Farmington, with her active involvement in the Historical Society, and her service as the president of the Farmington Historical Commission---and then...only to be felled by illnesses of her body, a body that couldn't begin to live up to the strong, silly, dignified, remarkable, and memorable person that was the whole Judy Cook, good and beautiful in every way.

We hope that those of you who knew and cared for Judy will join us in a memorial celebration of her life on September 24, 2011 (National Punctuation Day) at 11:00 a.m. It will be held at Thayer-Rock Funeral Home, 33603 Grand River Ave., (1 block west of Farmington Road). Please put it on your calendar now and RSVP to [email protected] and include a phone number. Additional details will be provided when the date is closer. Refreshments will be served after the memorial at a different location. In lieu of flowers, Judy would have appreciated donations be made to The National Wildlife Federation, 11100 Wildlife Center Drive, Reston, VA 20190.

Please sign the guestbook (above) and share one of your fondest memories of being with Judy.
