Joan was born to Emil and Lempi Waarala in Lake Linden, Michigan on July 12, 1931. She graduated from Lake Linden High School in 1949 and received her R.N. from St. Joseph's Nursing School (Hancock, Michigan) in 1953. Joan was married to Raymond for almost 60 years when he passed away in 2014. Joan was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved working in her garden, planting beautiful flowers wherever she lived. Joan enjoyed golf and was a stellar putter. She was an avid reader of mysteries and crime novels.
