Floyd grew up in the depression, selling newspapers to help his family. He served in the navy during WWII as an ensign from 1942 to 1945. After which he attended the University of Michigan Engineering School while building his first house as a sideline. He was very highly regarded for his dedication, his insight and his problem-solving skills in his position as a Senior propulsion engineer in research and development at TACOM from 1951 to 1992 , receiving numerous awards. Upon his leaving, a conference room was named for him and remains so to this day. During this time he also raised a family and built numerous other houses, including the one his children were raised in and their present home, which he had recently reroofed on his own. In addition to doing all the work on his home (from uprooting trees to building the fireplace) he was an extremely well-read man, interested in world events. More than anything else he was a loving and caring man.
