Obituary

Florence M. Scroggins, beloved wife of the late Olin Scroggins, died on Friday, July 2nd in Danbury, CT. She was 99 years old.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on November 17, 1910, she was the daughter of Flora and James Muir, the middle daughter of 5 children. Her older sister was the late Thelma ("T") Dingman, her younger sister was the late Gertrude ("Gertie") Bursick. Florence had an older brother, the late Jim Muir, and a younger brother, the late Charlie Muir. She grew up in Detroit and as a young girl she'd occasionally see Henry Ford driving his model T down their street. At 18, Florence began working for Awrey bakery and was Executive Secretary to the Awrey brothers for 36 years until retirement in 1965. It was here at the bakery she met Olin, the man who became her husband of 54 years.

Florence was a Michigan resident for 88 years. She lived in Greenwich, CT for 7 years and then in Ridgefield, CT. Florence and Olin owned and bred racehorses. They enjoyed racing many offspring from their 2nd horse, LauraLisa. In retirement they traveled to Barbados, England, Scotland, Italy, France and throughout North America. Over the years Florence enjoyed the arts, creating in decoupage, and needlepoint. She was an accomplished cook, and an avid reader - reading well into her 90's. She was always interested in fitness, including yoga, swimming and walking. At the age of 93 she was still walking up to 3 miles for recreation. She was very independent and could be seen driving her sporty red Thunderbird into her early 90's. A tireless volunteer, she loved nothing more than helping others. She worked countless hours for the Myasthenia Gravis foundation of Michigan and later for Kids in Crisis in Greenwich, CT. Florence was devoted to her family and friends. A dedicated letter and card writer throughout her life, she went out of her way to keep in touch with all her extended family and many friends.

She was very involved in the lives of her granddaughters and their families, her nieces and nephews and their children. Dearly loved by her family and friends, all that knew Florence were touched by her warm heart and generosity of spirit. Florence is predeceased by her husband Olin and her son Richard M. Scroggins. She is survived by her nephew Tom Bursick, his wife Marsha and family, nephew Jim Bursick, niece Pat Crilley, her husband Earl and family, niece Sunny Hemele and family, John Groske (husband of her niece, the late Margie) and family, nephew Rick Muir, niece Sue Wisler and family, niece Sally Hoffman and family, and nephew David Dingman and family. She is also survived by granddaughters, Laura Scroggins, husband Jamie and family, Lisa Scroggins, husband Jonathan and family and Sarah Scroggins, husband Marek.

A private burial will be at Grand Lawn Cemetery, Detroit, MI. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider contributing to Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of Michigan, Michigan Cancer Society and Hospice of Michigan.
