Obituary

Douglas W. Mauno, 78, passed away peacefully at home in Westland, Michigan on February 24, 2016. He had suffered a stroke in September 2015 and its subsequent effects. He was born April 24, 1937 in Calumet, Michigan to Wilho and Esther (Leskela) Mauno. He and Sharron (Mousseau) married in 1955.

He is survived by Sharron, his wife of 61 years.

Dearest father of Scott Mauno and Tamra (Douglas) Deykes. Loving grandfather of Alexandra, Alyssa and Douglas. Dear brother of Lois (the late Donald) Eby. Uncle to Paul, Mark and John Eby. Brother in law to James and Carolyn Mousseau, Paul (the late) and Loretta Mousseau and uncle to Steve, Ron, Jackie, John, Pat, Joe, Paul, David, Tara, Nicole, Lance, Brandon, and Zach.

Doug's father, Wilho Mauno and mother, Esther Mauno preceded him in death.

Doug spent his early years in Calumet and moved to Detroit and then Livonia where his family relocated. Then he subsequently moved to Westland after he and Sharron married. They enjoyed the next 61 years together with children and grandchildren. He was a graduate of Bentley, High School, in Livonia. Doug was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 30 years. Following retirement, he began a second career with Burroughs/Unisys.

Doug was proud of his Finnish heritage and never lost his love of Michigan's Copper Country. He maintained contact with relatives and friends in Calumet, Houghton, and Hancock throughout his life and visited as often as he was able. He was also a member of the Finnish Center in Farmington, Hills.

Doug and Sharron were long time members of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Livonia.

Doug thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid deer hunter, loved fishing, and always kept a garden. He had a big heart for his dogs and could not turn away a stray cat. His love of the outdoors was reflected in the many vacations he took with his family and friends across the United States. They visited many of our national parks, staying at campgrounds and with relatives. It was something he truly enjoyed.

Doug was a very social person and loved making new friends anywhere he went. Everyone knows that Doug enjoyed the lottery.
